Diesel Engine Diagnostics in Boise & the Treasure Valley
Computer diagnostics and hands on testing for heavy and light duty diesel. We find the actual cause before we replace parts, so you pay to fix the problem once.
The short version
- A fault code tells us where to start looking. It does not tell us which part to replace.
- We pair scan tool data with testing on the truck, so the repair is based on a confirmed cause.
- We diagnose Cummins, Powerstroke, Duramax and other heavy and light duty diesels, including DPF, DEF and SCR faults.
- Shop diagnostics in Garden City, plus mobile diagnosis for trucks that cannot be driven.
- Serving Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell and the wider Treasure Valley. Call (208) 809-0305.
A check engine light, a truck that will not pull, hard starting or rough running all need the same first step: find out what is actually wrong. We diagnose diesel engines and their aftertreatment systems at our shop in Garden City and in the field across the Treasure Valley.
How it works
A code is a starting point, not a diagnosis
Modern diesels monitor themselves and store fault codes when a reading falls outside its expected range. The code points at a circuit, a sensor or a system. It does not say why the reading is off.
A sensor code can mean a failed sensor, but it can just as easily mean damaged wiring, a bad connector, or a real problem the sensor is reporting accurately. Replacing the part named in the code without testing is how trucks end up with a new part and the same problem.
What the scan tool gives us
Stored and active fault codes, live data and system readings. It tells us where to look and what the engine control module is seeing.
What testing on the truck gives us
Confirmation. Checking wiring, connections, pressures, flow and the component itself shows whether the code points at the real cause.
Why we test before we recommend
Diagnostic time costs far less than the wrong parts. Confirming the cause first means the quote you get is for the repair the truck actually needs, and the problem is fixed instead of reset.
When to bring it in
Symptoms that call for diagnostics
Any of these is worth diagnosing before it turns into a breakdown:
- A check engine or warning light, steady or intermittent.
- Loss of power, particularly under load or on a grade.
- A derate or limited road speed.
- Hard starting or no start.
- Rough running, misfire or surging.
- Excess smoke of any color.
- Rising fuel consumption with no change in how the truck is used.
- Frequent regeneration or DEF and SCR warnings.
Intermittent problems
The hardest faults are the ones that come and go. If a problem only shows up when the truck is hot, loaded or on a certain route, tell us exactly when it happens. That detail often narrows the search faster than any code.
What we diagnose
Engine and aftertreatment systems
- Fuel system. Delivery, pressure and injector related faults.
- Air and turbocharger. Boost, intake restrictions and leaks.
- Electrical and sensors. Wiring, connectors, sensors and control module communication.
- Cooling and fan systems. Overheating and fan clutch problems.
- DPF. Backpressure testing to tell a cleaning job from a replacement. See our DPF cleaning service.
- DEF and SCR. A derate with no DPF warning often traces to the SCR side, and cleaning the filter will not fix it.
We work on Cummins, Powerstroke and Duramax pickups as well as heavy duty trucks. For platform specific work see Cummins, Powerstroke and Duramax repair.
What to expect
How a diagnostic visit works
- You tell us what the truck is doing. When it happens, how long it has been happening, and what has already been replaced.
- We scan and review the data. Codes, live readings and system status.
- We test to confirm the cause. The code narrows the search and testing finishes it.
- You get a clear recommendation. What failed, what it takes to fix it, and what can wait.
Nothing gets replaced until you have approved it.
